The continued rise in health care costs, amplified with the new efforts of health care reform, have prompted plan sponsors to think differently about approaches to health benefits management. It is now evident that in order to effectively mitigate long-term health care cost trend, plan sponsors must focus on behavior change: higher engagement and more accountability for health outcomes. This focus on improved engagement and accountability is supported by plan designs that not only cause the consumer to change his or her behaviors, but also for the plan sponsor and the service providers to improve their accountability for better outcomes. This shared accountability is fundamental to sustainable health improvement.
